Here
at Prairie Geomatics we do get out to the back
country occasionally, and we have family who regularly head WAY up
north to remote
arctic areas... so, we took one of the SPOT units out
of the box and did
the whole activation thing - everything works very
well, right from the initial web activation/setup,
to testing and within 30 minutes we had everything
set up and running. We did an "I'm OK" message which arrived
within a few minutes to our email. The google earth link
in the email
brought
up this image.

SPOT
is the only device of its kind, using it's built-in
GPS receiver to determine
location coordinates, then sending this information
and a pre-programmed message via a commercial satellite network.
And because it uses 100% satellite
technology, SPOT works pretty much everywhere –way
beyond limited cell phone range.
HOW IT WORKS:
Once activated, SPOT will acquire its exact coordinates from
the GPS network, and send that location along with a distress
message
to the
GEOS International
Emergency Response Center every five minutes until cancelled
or until the batteries are depleted. The Emergency Response
Center notifies the appropriate
emergency responders based on your GPS location and personal
information – which
may include local police, highway patrol, the Coast Guard, our country’s
embassy or consulate, or other emergency search and rescue teams – as
well as notifying your emergency contacts about the receipt of a distress
signal.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Even if SPOT cannot acquire its location from the GPS network
it will still attempt to send a distress signal – without exact location – to
GEOS, which will still notify your contacts of the signal and continue
to monitor the network for further messages.
FUNCTIONS:
SOS / 911: Use
this function In the event of a life threatening or other critical emergency
to notify emergency services of your GPS location and that you need
assistance. The GEOS International Emergency Response Center alerts the appropriate
agencies worldwide – for example contacting 9-1-1 responders in North
Help: In the event of a non-life threatening emergency, you can use this function
to notify your personal contacts that you need assistance. Additional SPOT
Assist services can be purchased and programmed to your Help button as well.
When activated with SPOT Assist, the Help button will notify professional services
either on the land or water. SPOT has partnered with national service providers
to offer non-life threatening assistance.
Check-in/OK: This feature allows you to let your friends and family know that
all is OK with a pre-programmed message along with your GPS location. With
a push of a button a message is sent via email or SMS to up to 10 pre-determined
contacts and your waypoint is stored in your SPOT account for later reference.
Your stored waypoints can be easily integrated into a SPOT Shared Page or SPOT
Adventure account.
Custom Message: This feature allows you to let your friends and family know
receive a custom message along with your GPS location with a push of a button.
Use this feature as a secondary OK message or transfer your personal help alert
to this message function if you are using a SPOT Assist service on your Help
button.
Track Progress: This feature allows you to send and save your location and
allow contacts to track your progress in near real time using Google Maps.
With your SPOT account you have the ability to set up a SPOT Shared Page which
allows you to show your SPOT GPS locations to others on a Google Map.

SPOTASSIST can get you back on track fast when you need help by contacting
roadside assistance providers. Unlike OnStar, SPOT sends your message and
GPS location using communications satellites so you can be located quickly,
even where cell coverage is unreliable. Unlike vehicle GPS devices, SPOT
can send your locating and a message to others, communicating in real time
with the push of a single button - no bluetooth technology or complicated
programming required.
Unlike OnStar, SPOT is portable and can be used outside the car.
SPOT is less than half the monthly service cost of OnStar. This service is available in Canada, the US and Puerto Rico
How to Purchase SPOTASSIST:
*Purchase SPOTASSIST roadside service when you first activate your SPOT and
Basic Activation for a total of $129.99 USD.
Existing SPOT customers can upgrade their Basic Service to include SPOTASSIST
in their existing service by accessing their current account on the FindMeSPOT
website or contacting FindMeSPOT. The service will be added to their current
service at a prorated fee of $30USD. Annual basic service is required, which
includes unlimited use of Check In and 9-1-1 messages.
Extremely Important Notice:
Once the HELP button is enabled for Roadside Assistance use, you will not
be able to use the HELP button function to contact your friends and family.
The HELP button will only work for Roadside Assistance. You can still use
the CheckIn button to contact family and friends.
GEOS SEARCH AND RESCUE BENEFIT

The GEOS Search and Rescue Benefit provides up to $100,000 (USD) of additional
search and rescue resources, including helicopter extraction around the
world and reimbursement benefits - underwritten by Lloyds of London - for
